Keeping mice and rats out is easy

Mice crawl through tiny cracks and holes to get into your house, shed, or business premises. They make nests in unused corners and can even survive on a few breadcrumbs or seed scraps.

You may not even realise that there are mice in your home. If nothing is done about it, a mouse infestation can quickly develop.

In this case, prevention is always better than cure.

The best and most permanent way to keep mice, rats and other rodents out of your home is to exclude them. This prevents them from entering and causing nuisance in your home. It is particularly important to make areas where you store, process or use food mouse-proof.

If you know where the mice or rats are coming from, you can close off these passageways with steel wool and keep them out of your home in an animal-friendly way. It is important to keep the places where mice like to nest clean and to remove any food sources.

Seal cracks and holes with stainless steel wool

Use stainless steel wool to prevent mice and rats from enlarging the cracks and holes. Do not use regular steel wool, even if it is cheaper. Regular steel wool will rust and can cause stains that are difficult to remove.

Be sure to also check electrical and sanitary entrances, doors, gutters, ventilation openings and chimneys for rodent access.

Seal any opening larger than 6 millimetres. It may be a good idea to seal smaller holes as well. Mice are known to gnaw their way through things. That small hole can quickly become large enough for a mouse to get through.

Stainless steel wool is ideal for sealing these holes. You can also use this steel wool around pipes and heating pipes. Stainless steel wool will not burn due to the heat of the pipe. A pipe is usually not hot enough for this.

What are the advantages of steel wool against mice and rats?

  • Steel wool cannot be gnawed through.
  • It is easy to install and can be removed if necessary.
  • No hazardous chemicals or poisons are required.
  • Permanent ventilation*.
  • Cost-effective solution

* If there are certain requirements regarding ventilation, steel wool may be less suitable and you may wish to opt for our Mouse & Rat STOP mesh. However, in most cases, the use of steel wool is sufficient.

Common use of steel wool against mice & rats

  • Sealing gaps and cracks in houses and sheds.
  • Sealing holes in electricity and lighting poles in marinas.
  • Sealing holes in electricity and lighting poles on campsites.
  • Sealing holes where solar panel cables pass through.
